SUBJECT: Hardy Happenings: August 2024

Hardy Happenings - August 2024
PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE

I hope you are all having a fun and safe summer! As we head into August, the PTO has a few important dates and messages to provide about the upcoming school year.

  • August 17th 10AM - 12PM - Stop by Hardy's Lake St playground for a glass of lemonade or iced coffee and say hi to our new Principal - Gretchen Saunders!
  • August 20th 6:30PM - PTO Meeting to set the budget and discuss goals for 24/25 school year.
  • September 4th - First Day of School for grades 1-5!  For Kindergarten, half of the class attends September 4, half the class attends September 5, and then all Kindergarten students begin full-time school on the 6th. Stay tuned for communication from the school administration for details and click here for the 24/25 calendar.

We hope new and returning families alike will get involved in the PTO this year! Take a look at the currently available volunteer opportunities either on the website (updated periodically) or the list below, or suggest a new project to enhance our school community. We look forward to seeing Hardy grow as a community in the 24/25 school year.

SCHOOL NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
Welcome Principal Saunders!

Principal Gretchen Saunders officially stepped into her role at Hardy July 1, 2024.

Let's give her a warm Hardy welcome at a meet-and-greet at the Lake Street playground on Saturday August 17th from 10AM - 12PM.  The PTO will provide lemonade and iced coffee.  Please stop by to say hi!

Class Assignments for 2024-25

Families can expect to be notified of their students' class/teacher assignments for the 2024-25 school year in mid to late August via USPS mail and it will also be available in PowerSchool.

Once you receive your assignment you can add or update your child's information in the Hardy PTO Directory and start connecting with your future classmates.

Hardy's Staff directory can be found here and will be updated when final teacher hiring/placement is complete.

School Supplies for 2024 Back-to-School

The Hardy PTO will be ordering $8,000 worth of school supplies to help reduce back-to-school supply costs for families. Click here to see what the PTO has provided for the 24/25 school year.  Supplies will be delivered directly to teachers.  This is funded by YOUR direct donations each fall - so thank you in advance!

Depending on the grade, some students may not receive any additional supply lists from teachers, as they have already been purchased. Some grades may still receive a shortened supply list.

Examples of items students may still need: corded headphones, pencil box, and notebooks. If you are interested in participating in a bulk-purchase through the PTO of volume-limited, over-the-ear kids headphones for $8 each, please fill out this form.

Teachers and specialists love to receive extra tissues, paper towels, and wipes (Wet Ones, Clorox, baby wipes), so always feel free to send those in!

Families will still need to provide a backpack, lunch box if your student plans to bring lunch, daily snacks, and a water bottle.

If you need labels for your students’ items, consider purchasing from Mabel’s Labels, where 20% of your purchase price is donated to the PTO. Visit the site and search for “Hardy Elementary Arlington” to select our program, then shop for products.

Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a statewide organization that works to improve safety for the community at arrival and dismissal times. The SRTS team at Hardy works closely with crossing guards Linda (Lake/Brooks) and Katherine (Chandler/Hebert) and also Arlington Police Officer Corey Rateau, the safety team for Hardy. We appreciate their dedication to our students.

SRTS is looking forward to students and families having safe commutes to and from Hardy.  Please review the arrival/dismissal plan developed by the MA SRTS statewide coordinator.

Please note that Chandler Street is not available for parking during dropoff and pick-up times, but is a "kiss and go" area where students may be dropped off to walk independently to the school entrance.  There are many different signs about parking around Hardy.  Please review this document to learn more.

If you are interested in joining the SRTS team, please email Marloes Rozing, Ashley Kresl, and Becky Gibree at saferoutes@hardypto.com.

Enrichment

The new English Language (EL) curriculum that continues to be rolled out in the district, it provides opportunities to think of new and exciting enrichment opportunities for students in the 24/25 school year and beyond.  Each year the PTO plans and pays for 100% of enrichment programming (school-wide assemblies, in-school workshops, and field trips).

Your direct donations to the PTO funded the assemblies and all these field trips and enrichment experiences that make learning fun! While our main fundraising drive is in early fall (with a goal around $150/child), we appreciate (tax-deductible) donations to our PTO at any time. Donate here!

There are a variety of topics covered by the curriculum and we'd love for parents to be involved, whether you're a meteorologist, arborist, ornithologist, geologist, bee keeper, or just a parent who is willing to look for ways to bring fun experiences into the school - we'd love your help and expertise!

If you'd like to review the topics covered and offer and contribute suggestions - please fill in this form and let us know!

The Enrichment team is always looking for ideas and volunteers!  Please email enrichment@hardypto.com and president@hardypto.com.

Hardy DIG (Diversity Inclusion Group)

We are thrilled to announce Abigael (Abi) Vogt has offered to lead up Hardy's DIG group.

The DIG team plans to work together with the Hardy School Council on DIG efforts in the 24/25 school year. We will be asking for your ideas and input as we get going with a new school year. Please reach out to DIG@hardypto.com if you'd like to join Hardy's DIG team or have any questions.

Hardy Buddy Family Program

Part of what makes Hardy strong is its warm, welcoming community. You can help ensure a smooth transition for incoming and existing Hardy families that need guidance by signing up to be a Buddy Family.

This program is open to anyone, particularly families that:

  • Have students starting in classes other than Kindergarten, when it can sometimes feel more challenging for both kids and caregivers to break into established friendship groups.
  • Are starting partway through the school year.
  • Have just moved to the Hardy School area.
  • Currently attend Hardy but would benefit from a mentor family matched specifically for their needs.

Our goal is to pair these families with existing Hardy families to act as a personal point of contact for any questions regarding Hardy School. Please email buddyfamilyprogram@hardypto.com if you'd like to volunteer or have an incoming family that might benefit from this program.

The Arlington Public Schools also have a welcome center, which families new to the area may benefit from.  Learn more here.

Teacher's Wishlist & Gift Ideas

Teacher's wish lists for their classrooms are located here. These may take the form of items that can be donated to the school, or Amazon wishlists for new items or supplies. If you have pictures of items to offer as donations, please read these instructions and upload the photo here.

August PTO Meeting - Aug 20th 6:30-8PM - Planning & Budget Session

The monthly PTO meeting, held in person at the Hardy Library and over Zoom, is a great place to learn about Hardy events, curriculum, and issues, and to hear directly from our principal as well as our teacher representative(s).

You can participate in the conversation or just listen in. All are welcome. All are encouraged to participate. All Hardy caregivers are officially voting members.

If you have a question or topic you would like to discuss at the meeting (time permitting), please email president@hardypto.com in advance.

Minutes from past meetings can be found here.
